Hail Bruising

Hail Bruising is damage where a hailstone impact has fractured the reinforcing mat inside a shingle without necessarily breaking the surface. It feels soft to the touch, like a bruise on fruit, and it shortens the shingle's life even though the roof may not leak for years.
What it means
Hail bruising is damage to the internal structure of an asphalt shingle caused by a hailstone strike. The impact fractures the reinforcing mat that gives the shingle its strength, often without tearing the surface. Pressed with a thumb, the affected spot gives slightly, in the way a bruise on a piece of fruit does.
That tactile quality is where the name comes from and it is the primary way bruising is identified. It is frequently invisible in a photograph and easy to miss even at arm’s length on the roof.
Why it counts as damage
This is the argument homeowners find hardest to accept, and it is worth making properly rather than asserting.
A shingle is a composite. The mat inside carries the structural load and the surface granules protect the asphalt from ultraviolet degradation. When an impact fractures the mat, the shingle keeps working for the time being but has lost its integrity at that point. Thermal cycling, wind, and ordinary weathering then act on a shingle with a fracture running through it.
So the loss is of remaining service life. A roof with substantial bruising is watertight today and will fail materially sooner than it should have. That is a real loss even though nothing is leaking, and it is the basis on which such damage is claimed.
It is also why a homeowner saying “but there is no leak” is not making the point they think they are making.
How it is identified
By walking the roof and feeling it, in combination with the other markers.
Impact damage from a genuine hail event has a random distribution across exposed slopes, and it is normally accompanied by corroborating evidence elsewhere: dents in soft metals such as vents, flashing, gutters, and mechanical equipment. Those soft metals are the most useful confirmation available, because they dent visibly where a shingle bruises invisibly.
A test square is the standard method for quantifying it: a marked area, conventionally ten feet by ten feet, within which impacts are counted so that damage density can be assessed consistently across slopes rather than impressionistically.
What it is confused with
Manufacturing blisters are the usual mix-up. Blisters form during production or from trapped moisture and gases, and they can look superficially similar. They differ in appearance under close inspection and, more tellingly, in distribution: blistering follows the manufacturing and the roof, not a storm track, and it will not correspond to dents on the soft metals.
Foot traffic damage and mechanical damage from tools or ladders also produce marks that are not storm-related and that a careful inspection distinguishes.
Common mistakes
Claiming bruising without walking the roof is the most damaging to a contractor’s credibility.
The second is failing to document the soft metals, which are frequently the strongest corroboration available.
The third is presenting a homeowner with a conclusion rather than showing them. A homeowner who has felt a bruised shingle understands the claim; one who has been told about it does not.

Explain that the damage is inside the shingle rather than on top of it, and that this is exactly why an inspection is needed rather than a look from the ground.

- Because the reinforcing mat is what holds the shingle together and keeps it weatherproof over time. A fractured mat is a failure point that will open up under normal weathering, so the loss is of remaining service life. That is why a roof can be genuinely damaged and completely watertight on the same day.
- Can hail bruising be seen from the ground?
- No. It frequently cannot be seen clearly from the roof either, which is why identification relies on touch as much as sight. Anyone offering a definitive assessment of bruising from a driveway is not in a position to make one.
- How is bruising told apart from a manufacturing defect?
- Chiefly by pattern and by feel. Impact damage has a random distribution consistent with a storm and usually shows corresponding marks on soft metals nearby, while manufacturing blisters tend to have a distinctive appearance and a distribution unrelated to any weather event.
