Test Square

Also called: test area, 10x10 square, chalk square

Test Square is a marked area of roof, conventionally ten feet by ten feet, within which hail impacts are counted. It turns an impression about damage into a density that can be compared across slopes and between inspectors, and it is the standard method on roof inspections.

What it means

A test square is a sample area marked out on a roof slope, conventionally ten feet by ten feet, within which the inspector identifies and counts hail impacts. The count gives a damage density for that slope, and densities can then be compared between slopes and against whatever threshold the carrier applies.

The method exists to replace impression with measurement. Two competent people looking at the same roof can form quite different overall impressions of how badly it is damaged. Two competent people counting impacts inside a marked square tend to arrive at similar numbers.

Why the slope-by-slope part matters most

Because hail is directional, and this is where a great many roof claims are decided.

A storm blowing from one quarter drives stones into the elevations facing it and largely spares the others. It is entirely normal for a roof to carry heavy damage on two slopes and almost none on the remaining ones.

That pattern determines the scope. A carrier that finds damage on one slope may scope a repair to that slope alone. A contractor arguing for full replacement is usually arguing either that the other slopes are damaged too, or that a matching issue makes a partial repair unworkable. Both arguments depend on having tested every slope rather than the worst one.

Testing only the elevation that looks bad, and extrapolating, is therefore both weak evidence and a strategic error: it leaves the contractor with nothing to say about the slopes the adjuster declined.

What the number does and does not settle

It quantifies density; it does not by itself decide the claim.

Thresholds vary. Carriers apply different expectations, and the assessment takes account of impact size and severity as well as count, together with corroborating evidence on the soft metals. A confident claim that a specific number of hits per square is the industry standard overstates how uniform the practice actually is.

What the count reliably does is make the inspection legible to somebody who was not there. A desk adjuster reading photographs of marked squares with counted impacts on each elevation is looking at something they can evaluate. The same claim expressed as “significant hail damage throughout” is not evaluable at all.

Doing it well

Mark every slope, not the best one. Photograph each square with the marks and the impacts visible, and with something for scale. Record which elevation each square is on, because a set of photographs nobody can place on the roof loses most of its value. Photograph the soft metals alongside, since they corroborate.

Common mistakes

Testing one slope and generalising is the most common.

The second is marking squares without photographing them in a way that identifies the elevation.

The third is treating the count as the whole case. It is one component of an argument that also rests on impact characteristics, the corroborating dents, and the condition of the roof generally.

Explain that it is a counted sample rather than damage, and find out who marked them, because the adjuster's squares and the contractor's squares mean different things to the file.

Questions people ask about test square

How many hits in a test square means the roof is damaged?
There is no single universal number. Thresholds vary between carriers and are applied alongside judgement about the size and severity of the impacts. Anyone quoting a fixed number as though it were an industry rule is overstating how standardised the practice is.
Why is each slope tested separately?
Because hail is directional. A storm driven from one direction can damage two elevations severely and leave the others untouched, so a single square is not representative of the roof. Testing each slope is what distinguishes a partial repair from a full replacement.
Do the chalk marks damage the roof?
No. Marking is done with chalk or a similar temporary marker that weathers off. The marks make the sample area and the counted impacts visible in photographs, which is the whole point: an uncounted, unmarked assertion of damage is far harder to evidence.
