Mat Fracture

Mat Fracture is a break in the fibreglass or organic reinforcing layer inside a shingle. It is the physical damage that hail bruising describes, and it is the technical basis on which impact damage is treated as a loss of remaining service life.

What it means

Inside an asphalt shingle is a reinforcing mat, usually fibreglass in modern products and organic felt in older ones. It is the layer that holds the shingle together and gives it the strength to stay flat, resist tearing, and remain weatherproof through decades of thermal movement.

A mat fracture is a break in that layer. On a hail claim it is the actual physical damage that the term bruising is describing: the surface may be largely intact, but the structure underneath has been broken by the impact.

Why it is the technical heart of a hail claim

Because it is the mechanism that converts an impact into a loss.

A hailstone striking a roof does several things at once. It knocks granules off. It may mark the surface. And where the impact is severe enough, it fractures the mat. Only the last of these represents structural damage to the shingle, and only the last provides a defensible basis for saying the shingle’s service life has been shortened.

That is why engineering assessments concentrate on it. Granule loss has many possible causes, most of them not covered. A fractured mat under a discrete impact point is a mechanical consequence of a mechanical event, and it is much harder to attribute to ageing.

How it is assessed

On the roof, by feel and by inference. A bruised impact point yields under pressure because the broken mat no longer supports it, and that softness in combination with the impact pattern and corroborating dents on soft metals is what an inspection relies on.

Definitive assessment goes further. An engineer may remove a shingle and examine it directly, sometimes sectioning it, to establish whether the mat is genuinely fractured and whether the fracture is consistent with impact. This is one of the reasons an engineer report carries the weight it does: it can look inside the shingle rather than inferring from the outside.

Why it does not leak straight away

Because a fractured mat inside an otherwise intact shingle is still covered by the surface and still sheds water. The fracture is a weakness, not an opening.

What happens subsequently is that the roof continues to move. Asphalt shingles expand and contract with temperature every day of their lives, and a shingle with a fracture running through its reinforcement responds to that cycling differently from an intact one. The fracture opens up, the surface degrades over it, and the failure arrives years earlier than it otherwise would have.

That delay is the source of most of the argument on hail claims, because it separates the damage from its consequence by a period long enough for anyone to dispute the connection.

Common mistakes

Asserting a mat fracture from a photograph is not credible; the whole point is that it is internal.

The second is expecting a homeowner to accept the reasoning without being shown a bruised shingle they can press themselves.

The third is ignoring an engineer’s contrary finding rather than addressing its methodology.

This is the term that appears in engineer reports rather than in homeowner conversations, so a caller using it is usually reading from a document. Ask what the document is and who wrote it, because a mat fracture finding in a carrier's engineering report points a claim in a very different direction from one in a contractor's report.

On the roof it is inferred from the soft, yielding feel of a bruised impact point together with the surrounding evidence. Definitive confirmation requires examining the shingle itself, which is why engineering assessments sometimes involve removing a sample for closer inspection.
Does a mat fracture always leak?
No, and usually not immediately. The shingle remains weatherproof while the fracture is closed. It becomes a failure point over time as thermal movement and weathering work on it, which is why the loss is expressed as reduced service life rather than as an active leak.
Why do engineers focus on the mat rather than the surface?
Because the mat carries the shingle's structural integrity. Surface effects such as granule loss can result from many causes including ordinary ageing, whereas a fractured mat under an impact point is a specific mechanical consequence of a specific event.
