The reason the answer is an address lookup rather than a search for your town’s name is the single most important thing to understand about hail, so the rest of this page is about that, about why the date matters more than the size, and about what these records genuinely cannot tell you.

Why a town-level answer is usually the wrong answer

Hail falls in corridors. A storm cell lays down a track that is often only a mile or two wide, and the significant stones sit inside part of that track rather than across the whole thing. The practical consequence is that “was there hail in my town” and “was there hail at my house” are different questions with different answers more often than people expect.

A storm large enough to make the local news may have missed your street. A storm nobody reported may have gone straight over it. Neither of those is unusual, and both are invisible if you search by place name.

This is also why neighbours disagree about whether a storm happened. They are frequently both right.

The date is the part that matters

If you take one thing from the lookup, take the date.

An insurance claim is organised around a date of loss. The carrier needs to know which storm is being claimed for, and policies carry time limits that run from that date. Those limits vary by state and by policy, so check your own rather than trusting a general number you read anywhere, including here.

What follows from that is slightly counterintuitive and worth stating plainly: a date with no damage assessment is still useful, and a damage assessment with no date is not. Establishing when a storm passed over the address is the part that does not require anyone to climb anything, and it is the part the paperwork is indexed on.

What the records are, and where they are thin

Public hail data is built substantially from storm reports, which means somebody has to have observed the hail and reported it. NOAA logged 9,205 hail events across the United States in 2025, against 8,941 in 2024, with Texas at 1,453, Oklahoma at 836 and Kansas at 541 leading the count.

Those are counts of reports rather than counts of storms, and the distinction is not pedantic. Reporting depends on population density and on spotter coverage, so a thinly populated area will show fewer events than actually occurred there. Radar-derived products fill some of that gap, which is why an address lookup that combines sources will often show history where a pure report database shows none.

The upshot for a homeowner: finding hail in the record is solid evidence that hail happened. Finding none is weaker evidence that it did not.

Size in the record is a peak, not your roof

Every hail record carries an estimated size, and it is consistently misread.

Across the 120 named hail storms we tracked between 31 July 2025 and 22 July 2026, the median peak size was 2.25 inches. Thirty-nine peaked at 3 inches or larger, and 23 peaked below 1.5 inches. Those are peaks, describing the worst cell in each storm rather than a typical point inside it, and the set is made of storms significant enough to be named rather than of hail in general.

So a recorded size of two inches does not mean two-inch hail fell on your roof. It means the storm produced stones that large somewhere along its track.

You will also see a 1-inch line treated as though it were a damage threshold. It is not. The National Weather Service defines a severe thunderstorm as one producing a tornado, winds of at least 58 mph, and/or hail at least 1 inch in diameter — a criterion for warning the public about a storm, carrying no claim about roofing. No federal source states a hail size at which a roof is damaged, because it depends on the roof covering, its age, the impact angle and the wind.

What to do with the date once you have it

Check the address, write down the date and the estimated size, and then get someone to look at the roof. Those are separate steps and the order matters: the history establishes that an event happened and when, and an inspection establishes what it did.

Limitations

The hail counts above are NOAA storm reports and understate events in areas with fewer observers. The size distribution is drawn from named storms in one rolling year and reports peaks, so it does not describe typical hail. The 1-inch figure is the National Weather Service storm-warning criterion and says nothing about roofs.
